Industrial Fire, McKees Rocks Forging, Mckees Rocks, PA (Photos & Video)

Around 2330 hours on 1-22-12, Allegheny County Emergency Services
(ACES) began taking multiple calls for the reported industrial fire at
McKees Rocks Forging located in Stowe Township. The first alarm
assignment was Fire Station 275 (Stowe FD) and EMS Station 191
(NorthWest EMS). Station 275 within minutes put in service their
Ladder Truck, Engine, Rescue, Brush, and Utility with a full
compliment of staffing. PD and EMS arrived first and a scene size up
was relayed by EMS Supervisor 191 L1 (Early) who reported a warehouse
on fire good smoke and fire showing from the middle of the warehouse.
Soon thereafter, 275 Chief Gallagher arrived on scene and assumed the
"Nichol Avenue Command." Units arrived on scene and established a
water supply and began to enter the structure. Initially, two workers
were reported missing but were quickly accounted for. Command
requested 189 Truck (McKees Rocks) to the assignment for an additional
ladder company as well as Rapid Intervention Companies 109 (Ben Avon)
and 148 (Emsworth) as well. Upon finding the fire source it was
believed to be the actual forging unit on fire with a notable pool of
what is believed to be hydraulic fluid underneath. With consult from
the foreman on scene, command requested all units to stand fast inside
the complex and contain the fire but avoid dumping water as it was
unknown how water would react to the substance. Foam units from 197
(Moon Twp) as well as Station 100's (County Airport Authority) Foam
Unit were requested to the scene. Units kept the fire contained for
nearly an hour before the foam units were able to arrive on the scene.
Once on the scene both foam units set up on opposite sides of the
building and suppression operations were initiated. Within twenty
minutes of the foam suppression operations beginning the fire was
marked under control. Units remained on scene an extended time for
overhaul and cleanup. The official cause of the fire is still under
investigation by the Allegheny County Fire Marshall's Office.
